What Are Actinic Keratoses?
Actinic keratoses (AKs) are rough-textured, dry, scaly patches on the skin that are caused by excessive exposure to UV light (sunlight).
AKs are considered to be the first step in the development of skin cancer and have the potential to progress to squamous cell carcinoma. While most AKs remain benign, a study has shown that approximately 10% develop into squamous cell carcinomas within an average of 2 years.
There is no way to know ahead of time which AKs will develop into squamous cell carcinomas; therefore, it is very important for individuals with AKs to be under a dermatologist's care.
How Can Levulan Kerastick and Blu-U Help?
Levulan Kerastick Topical Solution is applied to and absorbed by the AKs. This solution, when absorbed by the AK cells, makes them extremely sensitive to light. The AKs are then exposed to the Blu-U Blue Light Photodynamic Therapy Illuminator. This exposure to UV light causes the destruction of the AK cells.
